Research
Hey guys! In this week’s media studies project I decided to resume by doing more research on my topic. To make sure my topic is relevant in today’s society I decided to do research on statistics and experiments done by different people. I found that 34% of professional athletes suffer from anxiety and depression, while 17% of collegiate athletes have a mental illness. Also, 26% of former athletes have a mental illness caused by the aftermath of their sport. Even though the percentages may not be a lot, think about the millions of athletes there are across the world. That is still at least thousands of athletes that struggle with their mental health which is important to take into consideration.
That percentage is without including social media and was done in 2022 so imagine how much more that percentage has increased since then. Seeing this made me realize I wasn’t the only one that experienced this situation. I continued exploring for more athletes' experience with social media and mental health and landed on an instagram post from a famous soccer journalist called Fabrizio Romano that covers the topic of mental health by using a quote from famous footballer Jude Bellingham.
“With the development of social media and technology, there’s more ways to attack someone in modern days,” Bellingham stated.
Seeing how even famous soccer players that I look up to talk about mental health is comforting in a way since it shows that even they struggled with their mental health at some point due to social media influence.
