Things are About to Get Deep

To continue with my article, I wanted to give the reader an understanding of how mental health outside of sports is crucial since many people struggle with it, even people that I know personally. I decided to do more research on mental health by first finding the general definition, the different types that exist, and the amount of people around the world that deal with mental health. The paragraph serves as the base to what I’ll be going into at a deeper level. I believe including this is important to enlighten the readers on the importance of mental health and how it correlates to my topic.

I wanted to show an example of how social media can have a huge impact on people’s lives and I decided to use WNBA player Breanna Stewart's story. She had to deal with threats and homophobic emails that were being sent to her wife Marta Xargat during the WNBA finals. This was due to her missing one of the two free layups with 0.8 seconds left for the game, this caused her team to lose Game 2.

When I read this story I was shocked, I couldn't believe such cruelty, especially over a game. I feel like including a story into the paragraph is important because it shows others that professional athletes also deal with mental health problems just like anybody else. It reminds the audience the superstar athletes that we see online are humans just like us, they have emotions and can be going through hard times.
