Struggles of Finding an Interview

Hey guys! I’ve made more progress on my article and would like to share it with you guys. For my third paragraph, I now want to talk about my topic and how social media can also affect people in sports. I decided I wanted to include a coach from a different school to give my audience a better understanding of how big this issue is in the sport industry. But I wasn’t sure who to interview. I started looking for coaches online that were around the area with a strong background in sports because I wanted to make my article as strong as possible. My goal was to get a coach that works with students and understand the challenges of social media.  I spent hours trying to contact many coaches through their social media and emails, however many didn’t respond or were not interested.  However my friend recommended to me his coach that is in Hialeah-Miami Lakes. Her name is Miriam Metzcus Ochoa and she is recognized at UCF as one of the best volleyball players of her decade . She ...

Things are About to Get Deep

To continue with my article, I wanted to give the reader an understanding of how mental health outside of sports is crucial since many people struggle with it, even people that I know personally. I decided to do more research on mental health by first finding the general definition, the different types that exist, and the amount of people around the world that deal with mental health. The paragraph serves as the base to what I’ll be going into at a deeper level. I wanted to show an example of how social media can have a huge impact on people’s lives and I decided to use WNBA player Breanna Stewart's story. She had to deal with threats and homophobic emails that were being sent to her wife Marta Xargat during the WNBA finals. This was due to her missing one of the two free layups with 0.8 seconds left for the game, this caused her team to lose Game 2...

Research

Hey guys! In this week’s media studies project I decided to resume by doing more research on my topic. To make sure my topic is relevant in today’s society I decided to do research on statistics and experiments done by different people. I found that 34% of professional athletes suffer from anxiety and depression, while 17% of collegiate athletes have a mental illness. Also, 26% of former athletes have a mental illness caused by the aftermath of their sport. Even though the percentages may not be a lot, think about the millions of athletes there are across the world. That is still at least thousands of athletes that struggle with their mental health which is important to take into consideration. That percentage is without including social media and was done in 2022 so imagine how much more that percentage has increased since then. Seeing this made me realize I wasn’t the only one that experienced this situation. I continued exploring for more athletes' experience with social media a...
